Photographic and other visual material connected with the work of the Home base of the London Missionary Society.
Photographs have been transferred to the archive in phases. Material transferred in the first phase has been divided into four sub-sections. The first deals with general aspects of the Home Office administration, including people, places and buildings associated with the history of the LMS in Britain and overseas, including officials and LMS headquarters. It also contains photographs of the British Royal Family and views of the Middle East. The second deals with The Orient in London Exhibition, held in the Agricultural Hall [now the Business Design Centre] Islington, 4 June to 11 July, 1908. The third contains official photographs from World War One, showing overseas troops and labour corps behind British lines in France, Greece. The fourth contains photographs of oil portraits of LMS missionaries and former directors, formerly held by the LMS as part of their Museum collections. Photographs transferred subsequently include photographs of the annual LMS gathering at Swanwick, 1954-1977, material from the London Missionary Society Print Library and picture sets created by the CCWM Advocacy Department, which were used as visual aids.

Where possible, each place name has been identified by the contemporary standard form (generally taken from Norman Goodall 's, 'A History of the London Missionary Society, 1895-1945', or from the 'Report of the Deputation to New Guinea and South Seas, April to August 1897', by Ralph Wardlaw Thompson and William Crosfield), and also by a current modern standard form (generally taken from the Getty Thesaurus of Geographic Place Names), where this is different.
