description Collection of portraits of London Missionary Society missionaries in a variety of media, including photographs, engravings and glass lantern slides. Also includes portraits of figures associated with the London Missionary Society.
scb_arrangement The initial deposit of portraits was arranged in two series, with those from the period pre-1945 found in Series 1 (boxes 1-6), and those from post-1945 found in Series 2 (boxes 9-12). Within each of the two series, portraits are arranged alphabetically by missionary, with the portraits of married couples being filed together. The collection also includes copies of engravings of London Missionary Society missionaries taken from the 'Evangelical Magazine' (box 7), a collection of portraits and engravings of miscellaneous individuals associated with the work of the London Missionary Society, including ministers, family members of missionaries and Secretaries of the Society (box 8), and images of London Missionary Society Associates and 'overseas leaders', being figures of significance for the Society and its history (Box 12). Contents of these boxes are as follows: Box 1 Series 1, Surnames A-C Box 2 Series 1, Surnames D-I Box 3 Series 1, Surnames J-L Box 4 Series 1, Surnames M-Q Box 5 Series 1, Surnames R-S Box 6 Series 1, Surnames T-Z Box 7 Engravings of missionaries from the Evengelical Magazine Box 8 Miscellaneous & Secretarial Box 9 Series 2, Surnames A-G Box 10 Series 2, Surnames H-N Box 11 Series 2, Surnames O-Z & Associates Box 12 Series 2, Overseas Leaders Later additions to the collection comprise portraits from the 1960s to the early 1990s, including missionaries whose service began with the London Missionary Society and ended with the Council for World Mission, following its creation in 1977, and those missionaries who transferred their service from the English Presbyterian Mission in the 1970s.
