scb_admin_history Rev Dr Bernard Thorogood was a London Missionary Society missionary in the Pacific from 1952 to 1970, and CCWM/CWM General Secretary from 1970 to 1980. Barrie Downing Scopes served as a missionary in North India with the London Missionary Society from 1956 to 1971, and was later General Secretary of the Council for World Mission. He acted as the researcher and administrator of the 'LMS History Project' which resulted in the publication of 'Gales of Change: Responding to a Shifting Missionary Context. The Story of the London Missionary Society 1945-1977' (Published for CWM by WCC Publications, World Council of Churches, Geneva, 1994). Continuing earlier accounts by Richard Lovett (1895) and Norman Goodall (1945), this book focuses on the history of the London Missionary Society from 1945 to 1977, when it became the Council for World Mission. The change of name marked the evolution from a Northern organisation engaged in "foreign mission work" to a fellowship of partners worldwide seeking to foster the development of local churches with local leadership on the basis of "Sharing in one world mission". Contributing authors to the book included Rev Joseph Wing, LMS missionary in South Africa, 1950-1957 and 1962-1970, and General Secretary of the United Congregational Church of Southern Africa, 1967-1987; Rev Dr. John Parry, LMS medical missionary in Zambia, 1948-1969; Rev Donald Schofileld, LMS missionary in Madagascar, 1952-1972; Rev Iorwerth Thomas, LMS missionary in South India, 1940-1970; Miss Jose Robins, LMS/CWM missionary in North India, 1956-1980; Rev Dr. George Hood, Presbyterian Church of England missionary in China, 1943-1950, and in Malaysia-Singapore, 1951-1972, CWM overseas secretary 1972-1977; Rev Frank Butler, LMS missionary in Papua New Guinea, 1956-1972; Rev Dr John Garrett, research associate at the Pacific Theological College, Fiji, and author; Rev Pearce Jones, CMS/CWM missionary in Jamaica, 1963-1986; Rev Dr Robert Latham, served on the home staff of the LMS as an education secretary 1946-1956, and as home secretary, 1956-1966.
