Samuel McFarlane was born 18 Feb 1837 in Scotland. He was ordained in 1858 and was appointed by the London Missionary Society to serve at Lifou, in the Loyalty Islands in 1859. In 1870 he went to New Guinea to help set up a new mission, returning to England in 1871 to discuss the matter with the Directors of the Society who agreed that Cape York should become the Headquarters of the New Guinea mission. McFarlane returned in 1873 and was based at Somerset until 1877 when he set up a new mission station at Samarai (Dinner Island). Retiring in 1887 to Bedford he wrote The Story of the Lifu Mission and Among the Cannibals. He died in 1911. E |
