Admin history: Samuel McFarlane was born 18 Feb 1837 in Scotland. He was ordained in 1858 and was appointed by the London Missionary Society to serve at Lifou, in the Loyalty Islands in 1859. In 1870 he went to New Guinea to help set up a new mission, returning to England in 1871 to discuss the matter with the Directors of the Society who agreed that Cape York should become the Headquarters of the New Guinea mission.
