Summary: Whistleblowers have an essential role in the fight against economic crime, but their position is also not without risk. There are a number of ways in which they need protection, ranging from strong employment law provisions to witness protection programmes for themselves and their families. Although a number of jurisdictions, including the U.K., have provisions catering for these issues, they do not provide a perfect solution and, not least in a country such as Nigeria, the solutions themselves can give rise to issues which need to be addressed.
