description Although May Fourth has received an extraordinary amount of scholarly attention for decades, its contours and periodization remain blurred and contested. This article suggests that the significance of May Fourth resides in the ways in which it established a fundamentally new template for student led social movements that fused novel notions of progress with older ones of remonstrance, thus achieving transcendence in public performance.
