Summary: In this research we have endeavoured to fit some pieces in the jig-saw puzzle of Gujarat during the years of confusion between the decline of the Maitrakas and rise of the Caulukyas. In the first Chapter we have given a Chronological Table of the whole period, and we have given cross references to the pages in the Chapters. The Second Chapter opens with the Maitrakas where we give an account of the slow decline of this dynasty, the rivalry between the Gurjara Pratiharas, the Rastrakutas and the Western Calukyas. In the Third Chapter we have given the history of the Saindhava dynasty which ruled the North-Western tip of Saurastra. They have been neglected hitherto, but they emerge to be a very successful dynasty. The Fourth Chapter gives the history of the Capa or the Capotkata dynasty of Gujarat. In the Fifth Chapter we have given an account of the Paramara dynasty of Malwa, as well as short sketches of their various branches. The Sixth and the final Chapter deals with the rise of the Caulukya dynasty. We have included 5 maps and a detailed genealogical table. It will be noticed that we have not included in detail the origin of the Gurjaras as a whole. We feel that this subject is very complex and we would not have been able to do it full justice.
