description The Philips Building houses the first dedicated and purpose-built library space for the School of Oriental and African Studies, as well as arts accommodation including a lecture theatre and academic areas. It was designed by Denys Lasdun & Partners, who were appointed in 1960 on the recommendation of Sir Leslie Martin, consultant architect to the wider University of London precinct redesign which included the Philips Building. Building work commenced in 1970, and the new library building opened in 1973. It was named the Philips Building in 1998, to commemorate the Director of SOAS who oversaw its completion, Sir Cyril Philips. The Philips Building is situated behind the original SOAS building on Thornhaugh Street in Bloomsbury, and is accessed via a link block through the original main building (designed by Charles Holden of Adams, Holden & Pearson). In 2011 it received Grade II* listed status. Material in this Sub-Sub-Sub-Collection relates to the original design and build of the Philips Building, which was catalogued to mark its 50th anniversary since opening. Subsequent building works and alterations will be catalogued at a later date. Material consists of correspondence, notes, reports, drawings, a model, photographs and press cuttings. These records were created and collected by the school during the design and build of the Philips Building.
scb_arrangement Estates material relating to the Philips Library building project was originally kept alongside new library building material dating from the late 1940s onwards. For the purpose of the funded cataloguing project which coincided with the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Philips Library, material which pre-dated Denys Lasdun's involvement was declared out of scope. As far as possible, the original arrangement of discreet files as kept by J. R. Bracken, Secretary, has been retained within a wider system of arrangement based on architectural archiving standards at the RIBA.
