Prior to the Academic Board was the Academic Organisation Committee which was responsible for applying to the University of London for the admission of the School as a School of the University and to communicate with the University in regards to the first appointments of teaching staff. The Academic Organisation Committee ceased to exist after 25 June 1917 and the Academic Board had its first meeting on the 2 October 1917. The Academic Board was constituted in the initial Charter of Incorporation of the School of Oriental and African Studies.
The remit of SOAS's Academic Board is to advise SOAS's Governing Body on any proposal relating to the scope and structure of the School and any changes thereto, or on any matter concerning any aspect of the School which shall be referred to it by the Governing Body for consideration; also to bring to the attention of the Governing Body any matter which in the opinion of the Academic Board affects the teaching, research and/or general well-being of the School.
Over time, the Academic Board has had several committees which reported into it. These committees are the Heads of Department Committee, Research and Publications Committee, Academic Development Committee, Library Committee, Student Welfare Committee, Learning and Teaching Policy Committee and the Academic Structures Working Group.
