SOAS's Governing Body (renamed the Board of Trustees in September 2015) has absolute authority within the School, with overall responsibility for the general supervision, direction and control of all aspects of the School, in accordance with the School's Charter and Standing Orders. The Governing Body was constituted in the initial Charter of Incorporation of the School of Oriental Studies and held its first meeting on 22 June 1916.
The Governing Body has the power to create and amend Standing Orders and has overall responsibility for defining the system of governance within the School. All other committees in the School report into the Governing Body either directly or indirectly.
