B&W photographic print. 'Each khel (village part) has a Morung (baschelor's dormitory) where the boys go to live when they attain puberty. Here they are taught the traditions of the group by the older men, and undertake duties for them and for the khel to which they belong. The Morung plays a vital part in maintaining the traditional disciplines and ceremonies of village life. The building is thatched like a rich man's house (see R.5) and from the eaves hang "mobiles" made of shaped bamboo which tinkle in the breeze. The centre post is carved with a mithun head, human heads and conventionalised "tails". Behind this is the front wall, made of planks, with a removable entrance door of bamboo.' |
