B&W photographic print. 'Dorjoi playing a type of mouth organ, with a wind chamber made from a gourd. The instrument has bamboo pipes arranged in two sets, each pipe being fitted with a 'free' reed. There is a finger hole in each pipe and when the hole is uncovered the pipe will sound as the air passes through the reed. This, or a very similar instrument was collected by Mills in Charoi vilage, Manipur and is now in the Pitt Rivers Museum. Dorjoi wears a white dhoti (loin cloth) and jacket, a waistcoat and an elaborately tied turban topped with bird's plumes. (The above information was given to Geraldine Hobson by Dr. Helene La Rue, Curator of the Bate Collection and of the Musical Collection of the Pitt Rivers Museum).' |
