description |
B&W photographic print. 'This ritual, and the occasions on which it is performed is described in great detail in J.P. Mills' The Lotha (Lhota) Nagas. Briefly, it involves the sacrifice of a cockerel which is then set up at the foot of a post which has been cut and brought in from the jungle. At a signal from the "puthi" or village priest, all the warriors, shouting war cries, throw bamboo spears at the opya post. In this picture there are two posts, both bristling with spears.' |
