description |
B&W photographic print. 'This is a relaxed pose. Chingmak was a powerful chief of great influence, and although his village was deep in unadministered territory, he and Mills became great friends. He had travelled many days to Mokokchung to meet Mills, who had received him with the honour due to his status as a chief. In this photograph, Chingmak bears the chest tattoos and boar's tusk necklet of a successful head-hunter. His ivory armlets also indicate high status gained through head taking or feasting, and sections of conch shell decorate his ears. His cane hat is decorated with boar's tusks and a crest of dyed goat's hair.' |
