description Large series of notebooks containing field-notes from India, Nepal, Tibet and the Philippines. The field-notes record Fürer-Haimendorf's observations of tribal culture, social behaviour, language and relationships between members of the village or community in the form of 'house-lists' and genealogies. It is possible that the field-notes were used to write up observations in the diaries (a separate but related series), and references on the inside covers show that they were used as the basis of Fürer-Haimendorf's publications - ethnographic monographs, essays and theoretical works.
scb_arrangement The field-notes have been arranged according to tribal group / area studied, with notes from later, return visits to the original areas of study placed alongside the earlier records, to reflect the way in which Furer-Haimendorf worked. Where sets of field-notes have been numbered and grouped by Furer-Haimendorf, this arrangement has been preserved. The groups are as follows: Nagas; Chenchus; Reddis (Koyas and Konda Reddis); Bondos and Gadabas; Raj Gonds of Adilabad (this set of field-notes also includes notes on the Koyas, Chenchus, Kolams, Naik Pods, Konda Reddis); Apa Tanis; Tribes of southern India, including Kerala; Tribes of the Philippines; Miscellaneous rough notebooks . The groups also includes Betty Furer-Haimendorf's notebooks. As Betty worked so closely with her husband, her notebooks have been incorprated into the main sections wherever possible.

note Important Note: Some of the field-notes have had an additional numbering system imposed upon them at some point in their history. This makes use of numbered white paper labels, adhered to the outside covers. It is not known who was responsible for this system, or the logic behind this alternative arrangement. The current arrangement of the field-notes has NOT utilised this system, and the user should take care not to be misled. Numbers for the present arrangement are written on the inside cover of each notebook (e.g. PP MS 19, NB 1, 2 etc.)
