Summary: From early on in his career Addis spoke frequently in public and articles by him appeared regularly in journals and newspapers. The speeches and articles here range from longhand drafts to printed copies but most are in typescript. Addis gave talks on a variety of subjects, especially to audiences in the East, including railways, education, missionary work, opium and foreign relations and there is here an example of his writing under the nom de plume 'Quidnunc' for the North-China Herald in the 1890s. After he settled in London Addis spoke and wrote increasingly on banking and financial matters and these speeches are often printed; there are here also copies of speeches made on visits abroad, namely, in the US in 1920, 1922, and 1930, the East in 1922, Brazil in 1924, Berlin in 1929 and Basel in 1932, regular notes for the London section of the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC) chairman's speech and a few book reviews and obituaries. Several papers in this section were undated and have been dated from information elsewhere in the collection, especially from the diaries, but a number remain unidentified, although there is a summary list of speeches and articles compiled by Addis's secretary. The catalogue indicates the form in which the document appears i.e. printed, typescript or longhand and the presence of drafts.
