His theatre and concert going is less frequent than in previous years but he continues to read and work on speeches. After a year of poor health Addis has an operation in October and Lady Addis writes the diary from then on. JANUARY Thaw and milder weather; to London to see former colleagues at the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC) and to attend meetings of the London University Court and Investment Committee and the British and Chinese Corporation (B&C Corp.). and talks at the Treasury on a loan to Shanghai; working on a speech on Canadian Banking; death of Cecil Baring, Lord Revelstoke 'my dearest friend', 26. FEBRUARY To Edinburgh for family visits; discussions at the Treasury on currency report and sterling loan. 'He [Waley of the Treasury] is sympathetic but evidently fears political difficulties', 7; P&O and London University meetings; death of Mayers, 19; St Felix Council meeting, 'Good women but they are not in a hurry', 21; problems over choosing a new director of the British and Chinese Corporation (B&C Corp.)., 'Leveson wants to be a director. Dan and Barnes agree that cannot be.' 28. MARCH Working on a speech for the Cornhill Club, 'With increasing years 1 do these things heavily and painfully', 5; attends P&O, London University, Indian Christian Colleges Appeal, Currency Committee and British and Chinese Corporation (B&C Corp.). meetings. At the latter, proposed as Chairman but 'Grayburn is against my being Chairman of British and Chinese Corporation (B&C Corp.). in view of my connexion with Consortium and the Chinese dislike to it', 21; to Paris; Cornhill speech well received. APRIL Working on speech on Canadian banking; attends meetings of the London University Investment Committee, British and Chinese Corporation (B&C Corp.)., P&O and Tunbridge Wells Institute of Bankers; ill with influenza.MAY Attending talks on China policy and the British and Chinese Corporation (B&C Corp.). chairman's speech, and British and Chinese Corporation (B&C Corp.). and P&O meetings; still ill; to Paris.JUNE Currency committee and British and Chinese Corporation (B&C Corp.). meetings; introduces Li Ming to the Foreign Office and Bank of England. JULY Attends discussions on the Far Eastern situation and Canadian banking; more flu; Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC) London staff angered by a cut in their cost of living allowance. AUGUST Continuing ill health; agrees with Jean Monnet and David Drummond to study their plans for Chinese railways; anxiety about silver, 'US is buying heavily and China selling. The latter is disquieting for China trade with its large adverse balance', 24; meeting with Pratt at the Foreign Office about German railways in Kiangsi and Chekiang. SEPTEMBER To Scotland with wife and for urgent meeting with Shaw of the P&O; continued ill health. OCTOBER To Newcastle to make a speech on Robert Morrison, missionary; attends meetings at the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC) on Shanghai railway proposals, with Huang Pe-tsiau, Managing Director of the Nanking and Ningpo railways, with Frederick Maze, Inspector General of Chinese Maritime Customs, on raising a China loan of £150m. 'Why we couldn't issue 15mn', 12; and at the B&C, London University Court, Tuesday Club and St Felix Council; to clinic for operation. NOVEMBER Returns home in poor health. DECEMBER Continuing ill health.
