JANUARY Speaks on savings certificates at Fishmongers Hall, London, talks with Leveson on a campaign against the Boxer Indemnity Bill; refuses to appear as a witness before the Hong Kong Currency Committee, 'I don't think both Stabb and I ought to go', 5; Committee of Treasury and Universities' China Committee meeting; to Basel; to Foreign Office for discussions on Consortium policy; consults doctor about insomnia; attends National Economy Campaign meeting. FEBRUARY Attends Bank for International Settlements talks in Basel and London and, in London, talks on Hong Kong currency; turns down Abbey Road Society directorship, 'I cannot do more than I am doing.' 25. MARCH Attends Consortium and China policy discussions by the Committee of Treasury; to Basel, 'Much discussion and little result. Germans very depressed. French (Monet) [sic] very trying', 9; also B&C, London University Court, Cable and Wireless, P&O and Universities' China Committee meetings; to Paris. APRIL With wife to Braemar; attends meetings of the Committee of Treasury with talks on foreign loans, Bank of England Court and Universities' China Committee; to Basel. MAY To Morocco with wife and daughter Rachael for Bank of Morocco meeting, visiting and sightseeing; also to Basel with wife for Bank for International Settlements Annual General Meeting; '23 Central Banks represented. A unique and historic occasion', 19; continued meetings and talks; visited by Tsu Yu-pei, general manager of the Bank of China. JUNE Photographed for the National Gallery collection of distinguished men; to Brussels for unsuccessful meeting about long term credits, opposed by the French; to Basel; special meetings at the Bank of England to consider credit to Austria. JULY Committee of Treasury and London University Court meetings; to Edinburgh for Dominion Universities' Congress; to Basel for Bank for International Settlements meeting; 'All appreciate the gravity of situation but what to do puzzles us all', 13; international conference of French, German, American and British Ministers at the Foreign Office 'to decide the fate of Germany and of Europe', 21; to Hartrigge for family holiday. AUGUST To Basel; notes the gravity of Bank of England losses, '£50 millions in last three weeks', 12; and the increasing anxiety of the government; recalled from Hartrigge for currency crisis meetings. SEPTEMBER Again recalled from holiday to London for talks on leaving the gold standard; persuades Norman to continue attending Bank for International Settlements meetings despite this move. OCTOBER Continued meetings and discussions; to Basel; househunting, culminating with the purchase of Woodside, Frant, Sussex, 'We fell in love with the place on the spot', 22; to Paris; in London 'voted for the first time in my life for a conservative', 27; agreement reached at Committee of Treasury to ask Norman to resign. NOVEMBER To Basel to chair Bank for International Settlements meeting; begins driving lessons. DECEMBER Death of Stabb of the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC), 1; family move to Woodside; many meetings.
