JANUARY Committee of Treasury meetings; to the Hague for reparations discussions; Cable and Wireless meeting, 'We have decided to start a press campaign against the Post Office on the question of telephones', 27; to Berlin. FEBRUARY Committee of Treasury meetings, especially about the bank rate, also Cable and Wireless, London University Court and Tuesday Club meetings; death sister Annie, 5; ill health of daughter Robina; lunch at 11 Downing Street, 'A very homely friendly affair'. 27. MARCH Speaks on the Bank for International Settlements in Cardiff; to Morocco with wife and two children for Bank of Morocco meeting and sightseeing. APRIL Speaks to the Institute of Bankers on the Bank for International Settlements; Cable and Wireless meeting 'going from bad to worse', 7; to Basel, Switzerland for Bank for International Settlements talks, 'the atmosphere is excellent', 23; to Berlin. MAY In Berlin for final meeting of the general Council of the Reichsbank, 'it is sad to part after nearly 6 years of monthly meetings', 1; continued Bank for International Settlements discussions; 'dismal' Cable and Wireless meeting; Committee of Treasury meetings where 'Norman grows more and more temperamental, freakish and paradoxical', 7; talks at the Treasury; to Basel where 'the Bank for International Settlements is now in being & I am discharged of my duties as Vice-Chairman of the Organisation Committee. I could sing my Nunc Dimittis', 12; to Paris for Bank of Morocco meeting and Bank for International Settlements loan negotiations. JUNE To Paris; meetings of Bank of England Court, Committee of Treasury and at the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC); discussions in London and Basel on the Bank for International Settlements. JULY Committee of Treasury, London University Court and P&O meetings; 'My days go by in interviews, Stabb on Bkg trustee commissions, Stewart on Currency Corn. evidence, Siepmann on Bank for International Settlements, Hope Simpson on Japan, Mrs Bullen (Calcutta) on her securities with Chartered Bank', 4; to Basel; start of family holiday in Hartrigge, returning to London for meetings; starts as London University examiner for Doctor of Commerce degree and begins reading theses; meets son Tom 'happy and apparently content but still a mystery'. 30. AUGUST On holiday in Hartrigge working on speeches for visit to United States; visited by son William and wife. SEPTEMBER On holiday; on return to London attends more meetings and discussions including talk with son George's employer, 'He wants me to get George the entry to banks firms & in other words business connexions for his firm which I will not do. I cannot tout even for my own son.' 30. OCTOBER First meeting of the Cabinet Economic Advisory Subcommittee on China; also Committee of Treasury, the Universities' China and Cable and Wireless Committees, Bank of England Court and the Tuesday Club; to Basel; attends discussions on a chair of law at Hong Kong University; speaks on 'Free Trade and World Trade' at Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce, provoking news comment. NOVEMBER Leaves Cable and Wireless, 'Sorry to drop £1,800 a year but glad to go', 4; to US for lectures, dinners and meetings including a meeting with President Hoover, 'Talked Gold (a fetish) & China', 26. DECEMBER To Basel; meetings of P&O Committee of Treasury and China Committee; to Paris; working on Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC) chairman's report; makes speech on 'The Young Plan and the World's Credit Structure' to League of Nations meeting.
