JANUARY Discussion of Cunliffe Currency Committee First Interim Report at Tuesday Club dinner; son Tom demobilised. FEBRUARY Gives evidence to Decimal Coinage Committee; sons Tom to Oxford and Charles to Cambridge; meets Strauss and Thomas Lamont, United States bankers, 'Two high class men', 12; death of Koch of Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC), 'a great loss to the bank.' 13. MARCH Makes speech on 'The Economics of a War Indemnity' provoking much discussion and press comment; elected to the Committee of Treasury of the Bank of England, 'It is a high compliment formerly only paid after 15 or more years service as an ordinary director.' 27. APRIL 'My first Treasury Committee at Bank of England. As usual I found myself in disagreement but after a discussion carried my point re South African gold', 2; made a Vice President of the British and Foreign Bible Society, 'an honour I greatly prize.' 4. MAY Meets Vanderlip, United States banker; to Paris for the start of a draft Four Power Consortium agreement and meeting with Robert Lansing, United States Secretary of State. JUNE Silver wedding, 6; attends large meeting of League of Nations at the Albert Hall, London and a meeting to discuss London University B.Com. degree, 'I cannot say the response was enthusiastic. Very few people really believe in education, alas.' 19. JULY Daughter Betty presented at Court; family holiday at Goldwynch, Surrey; peace celebrations; resignation of Murray Stewart from Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC) for health reasons. SEPTEMBER Cycles to city during railway strike. OCTOBER 'Strenuous days with Indian Currency and also Lord Cunliffe's Currency Committee added to the B&C Chinese Central Railways Bk of Eng & Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC).' 9. NOVEMBER Murray Stewart replaced by W. Leveson. DECEMBER Final meeting of Cunliffe Currency Committee; final report of Indian Currency Committee produced; Addis writing speech for the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC) Chairman, Stabb. 'I wish Stabb would write his own speeches.' 27.
