JANUARY Addis offered chief managership of the Union of London and Smiths' Banks; Jackson unwilling to see him go and wants to increase his salary. FEBRUARY Daughter Raphael born, 2; salary increased to £4,500, less than that offered by other banks; to Foreign Office for meetings with Russian and Japanese representatives about China loans. MARCH Inter-bank conference in London with Addis as chairman and British representative on Consortium. APRIL To Morocco for Bank of Morocco meeting with sons Tom and Charles; diary written by Tom, mainly recording sightseeing. MAY Attends unproductive Six Power Consortium conference. JUNE 'Politics and business are sadly mixed up nowadays', 3; visits Foreign Office, 'Grey is evidently ready to give way to Russia's claim to Manchuria. I told him that from the group's point of view that would be to betray China,' 6; to Paris for inter-bank conference especially discussing Russian and Japanese claims in Manchuria. JULY, AUGUST To Shannanburn, Scotland for family holiday. SEPTEMBER Consortium defeat over Chinese loan, 'and so the patient work of all these weary months is dashed at a stroke to the ground', 23; Murray Stewart joins Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC) London Office to help Addis with loan business. OCTOBER Continued loan meetings, with Parliamentary questions; Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC) accused of being pro-German. NOVEMBER Consortium negotiations resumed. DECEMBER At Consortium meeting 'unexpectedly good work done in bringing the 6 groups into line. All were gratified and surprised.' 14.
