FEBRUARY To Paris for Bank of Morocco meeting; problems with French and Americans over Chinese railway loan negotiations. MARCH Attends meeting to appeal for support in starting a university in China; visits Scotland. APRIL Problems with the French over Hukuang railway loan agreement, now under negotiation for a year. MAY To Morocco for Bank of Morocco meeting; Japanese loan issued and oversubscribed; continuing Hukuang railway negotiations. JUNE Brother William inducted into the living of All Saints, Knightsbridge, London; much work on Tientsin-Peking railway loan business. JULY Daughter Jean born, 5; negotiating for purchase of new premises for Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC) in Gracechurch Street, London. AUGUST To St. Andrews, for holiday. SEPTEMBER To Antwerp, for visit to G. Koch and family; to Berlin and Paris for meetings with bankers. OCTOBER Turns down offer of a managership with the Royal Bank of Scotland. NOVEMBER 'Anglo-French-German-American Intergroup and Interbank Agreements signed. And so closes the longest most arduous negotiations in which I have ever taken part.' 10; revises opinion of Grey.
