Summary: Work on the Hankow-Canton railway loan with French, German and American involvement and many visits to the Foreign Office, Paris and Berlin. Addis finds the work hard and tiresome and forms a low opinion of Sir Edward Grey, the British Foreign Secretary. Both also refer to the purchase of their rented house, 'The Hall', 6A Primrose Hill Road, Hampstead, London and to its redecoration and furnishing, also to family events, visits, dinners, concerts and other social engagements, holidays and weekends away, church attendance, riding, cycling and golf. Written by Addis and Mrs Addis. JANUARY Problems with Chinese loan; to Paris for discussions. FEBRUARY Many meetings and problems with Chinese railway loan; to Paris. MARCH Meetings on loan business in Paris and Berlin, much trouble and visits to the Foreign Office. APRIL Loan problems and discussions continue; rented accommodation purchased; Addis overworked and discontented. 'Turner off in Ireland to see his wife. Townsend at Broadstairs with his. No one thinks of me! Muddled through somehow.' 10; family in Scotland; son Tom to Haileybury College, Hertfordshire. JULY Continued loan problems and unsuccessful English attempts to exclude Americans; meeting with architect, Schultz about house alterations; poor summer. AUGUST Addis is living with a French family in London while his family are in Scotland and his house is being redecorated. Emily Davidson, the militant suffragette, recently released from prison, is also living there.
