Summary: Mainly Mrs Addis referring to her own and her husband's engagements with the YMCA, Society for the Diffusion of Christian and General Knowledge among the Chinese, Shanghai Library Committee, St Andrew's Society and Shantung Road Hospital, also to social, family and domestic matters. Mrs Addis also mentions her husband's long hours in his office, other Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC) staff and their opinion of him. Addis's own entries briefly mention his work and dining out, golfing, race meetings and visits to friends and colleagues.JANUARY Guy Hillier 'is constantly at the Bank to get advice from Charlie, which he digests and gives out as his own to the Foreign Office,' 11; J.R.M. Smith appointed Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC) chief manager in Hong Kong in place of Jackson, with rumours that Addis is to be his assistant. FEBRUARY Visited by mother-in-law, Mrs McIsaac. MARCH Visited by brother-in-law, James McIsaac; mentions Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC) staff changes. APRIL Purchases bungalow at Kuling near Kiukiang in the hills for summer use; visited by Johnny Lockhart, a friend from early Hong Kong days and British commissioner at Wei-hai-wei, 'somewhat exhausting'. MAY Addis to remain in Shanghai, not move to Hong Kong; disappointed in Jackson's final visit: speaks on 'The Relation of the Foreign Community to the Education of the Chinese'. JUNE Mentions preparations for and postponement of King Edward VII's coronation celebrations. NOVEMBER and DECEMBER Much work created at Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC) by Mackintosh of Tientsin; many references, not detailed, to 'worrying times in Bank', the fall in value of the dollar and problems over a Dutch arbitration case; Addis offered a post with the American International Bank and refuses.
