Summary: Mainly Mrs Addis recording her own and her husband's engagements with the Children's Refuge, Library Committee, YMCA, Society for the Diffusion of Christian and General Knowledge among the Chinese, Shantung Road Hospital and St. Andrew's Society and also social and domestic matters. Addis's entries refer to dinners and other functions, visits to friends and the affairs of Pender Wake in Chefoo. MARCH `Bevis presented a loving cup from the staff to J.K. Tweed pro memoria Peking siege.' 25. JUNE Hears of death in May of brother George; sent to Chefoo to examine the books of Wake. JULY Bankruptcy proceedings begun against Wake, Addis remains in Shanghai while his family go to Japan; on the anniversary of his father's death he recalls `bitterness he never knew and I have long lost.' 18. AUGUST `Saw a child of 6 on a boat having her feet bound. Her crying was pitiful to hear.' 11; joins family in Hakone, Japan. SEPTEMBER Son William born. 5. DECEMBER Guy Hillier visits the Addis family in Shanghai.
