APRIL Death of Addis's mother, 3; daughter Robina born. 20. MAY 'Rode in a motor car', 2; visits Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC) in London and meets staff, Ewen Cameron, Guy Hillier and D.H. Mackintosh; also goes sightseeing and to the Derby JULY Ordered to New York to relieve A.M. Townsend; crosses Atlantic and comments on fellow passengers; arrives in New York and meets Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC) staff. Townsend 'in dreadful anxiety about his boy in Peking'. 28. AUGUST Visits Washington and calls on the War Office and Chinese Minister; joined by family, many visits and sightseeing. OCTOBER Leaves New York, having been given a silver cigar lighter by Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC) staff. 'Glad they liked me as I certainly liked them. It has been a very pleasant experience. We do not regret having come here,' 3; travels across the United States to San Francisco. NOVEMBER Arrives Shanghai.
