FEBRUARY Attempts to raise funds for famine relief in China by writing to newspapers; hears of Gershom Stewart's departure from the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC), 'A great loss to us.' 19. MARCH and APRIL Embarks with parents on SS Parramatta and travels to Colombo, Ceylon, via the Red Sea. At Colombo parts from parents en route for Australia and travels via Penang, Singapore, Hongkong and Shanghai to Tientsin commenting on fellow passengers and acquaintances. MAY III and absent from office after falling from a pony. JUNE Article on 'Railways in China' published in The Contemporary Review; hears of deaths of nephew Campbell in Australia and famine worker, the Rev. J. Crossett in China; returns to Peking. AUGUST Writes leading article in The Chinese Times of Tientsin. NOVEMBER 'I want to stir up a little interest here in education,' 20; dissatisfied with Peking 'I am not improving since my return to China.' 23. DECEMBER 'I am awfully tired of all this dining,' 4; moves to Shanghai; elected a director of the Society for the Diffusion of Christian and General Knowledge among the Chinese, [SDCGK].
