This class contains photographic material connected with the Swatow mission field. It is divided into 2 sub-sections. The first general section contains material from a number of sources, including photographs previously found in PCE boxes 22, 45, 93, 109, and 111-14 (Series I and Series I additional). The second contains material deposited by Mary Paton, who served as a missionary at Sua-bue from 1914 to 1950, a small amount of which relates to events or people from outside the Swatow region (Paton was evacuated during World War II). The material in the first sub-section has largely been kept in its constituent groups, other than missionary portraits and 1 miscellaneous file. The Mary Paton deposit has been divided into manageable units of related material. The files have been arranged chronologically as far as is possible, although individual files can cover large date ranges. The items show individuals, groups, buildings, and local scenes, featuring missionaries, Chinese Christians, hospitals, schools, etc. Where possible, each place name is identified by a contemporary standard form (generally taken from Edward Band's Working His Purpose Out) and a current modern standard form (generally taken from the Getty Thesaurus of Geographic Names). Lingdong (modern standard East Guangdong) has been used instead of Lingtung; Chao-chow-fu (modern standard Chao'an) has been used instead of Chaochowfu, Chao-chow-foo, Chaochowfoo, or Chaozhou; Sua-bue (modern standard Shanwei) has been used instead of Suabue, Swabue, or Swa-bue. The modern standard for Swatow is Shantou.
