Admin history: Sir Ian Scott, KCMG, was born in Inverness on 6 March 1909 and was educated at Inverness Royal Academy, Queen's Royal College, Trinidad, and Balliol College, Oxford. He joined the India Civil Service in 1932. He served in Sindh, Bannu, Chitral, and Peshawar. In 1945 he was appointed Deputy Private Secretary to the Viceroy of India, Viscount Wavell.
