Muqimuddin Farooqui was born in 1920 in Ambetha, Uttar Pradesh into a family of Muslim heritage. Farooqui was politically active as a student in St Stephen's College in Delhi, becoming college President. He joined the Communist Party of India (CPI) in 1938-1939. He was expelled from college for organising a successful university strike against the arrest of Congress Party leader, Jawaharlal Nehru. He was the first General Secretary of the All India Student's Federation and was jailed several times in the 1940s for his involvement in the Quit India movement. He was elected to the CPI National Council in 1958, Central Executive in 1972, and Central Secretariat in 1981. He remained a member of the CPI following the split in the party in 1964. He became National Secretary of the CPI and head of CPI International Department. He was married to Vimla Kapoor. Farooqui died on the 3rd September 1997. |
