Admin history: Dame Mary Scharlieb (1845-1930), was a pioneer female physician in the late 19th-early 20th centuries. She was one of the first four women students at the Madras Medical College. In 1883 she became lecturer in midwifery and gynaecology at the Madras Medical College. From 1187 to 1902 she was surgeon at the New Hospital for Women (later the Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Hospital) in London, being a senior surgeon from 1889.
