Summary: Original correspondence of the Eliza Hillier (née Medhurst) and other members of her family. These primarily comprise letters from Eliza Hillier to her younger sister Martha Saul (née Medhurst) and other family members, covering the period between Eliza Medhurst's journey, in May 1846, from Shanghai to Hong Kong to marry Charles Batten Hillier, until the latter's death in Bangkok in 1856, shortly after his appointment as British Consul to Siam. Subjects covered include personal and family matters, as well as political and judicial events in Hong Kong. The series includes letters from Charles Hillier to his and Eliza's children, Willie [William], Wattie [Walter], and Harry [Henry] Hillier. In addition there are number of letters from Eliza Hillier's brother Walter Henry Medhurst (of the British consular service in China) sent to Eliza and other family members.
