A. Sharpe to William Mackinnon. report on his journey to Moero, Kazembe's, Luapala & Msidi's Garanganza Country following Jan 1890 instructions from H.H. Johnstone, making protectorate treaties for Brit Govt., & gaining agreement to mineral concessions for Br. South Africa Co. Major traders en route Arab & helpful. One chief, Kazembe signed treaty & concession agreement; his enemy, Msidi, on missionary advice, refused. Latter also prevented Sharpe's attempt to get to Katanga copper & gold mines. Describes in detail Lake Moero, an old salt lake, section of Luapala river. Finds trading station nearby has little cloth to trade though much ivory available - fears German Ujiji station benefits. Recommends new L. Moero trade station with ample cloth & trading goods; deplores prohibiting the sale of gunpowder, & denies present existence of slaving - Arabs are liked, their trade legitimate.
