Admin history: J. E. Lesslie Newbigin (1909-1998) was a Presbyterian Church of Scotland missionary in Madras [Chennai] (1936-1946), then a Church of South India Bishop for the Diocese of Madurai & Ramnad (1947-1959) and the Diocese of Madras (1965-1974). He also worked for the International Missionary Council (1959-1961), World Council of Churches (1961-1965), the mission department of Selly Oak Colleges in Birmingham (1974-1979) and was Moderator of the General Assemby of the United Reform Church in 1978.
