Admin history: Thompson was born in Glastonbury, Somerset, to Wesleyan Methodist parents (the Rev & Mrs Thomas Thompson) on 8th May 1871. After being educated at Woodhouse Grove and Kingswood he graduated from Aberystwyth. He attended Richmond College in 1893 but his training was cut sort in 1894 due to an urgent need for missionaries in India.
