Admin history: Matthew Banks was born in Rotherham on 23rd February 1798. He began preaching in Yorkshire as a layman but after being accepted for the ministry his first posting was to Antigua, leaving England in late 1826 and arriving there in February 1827. Later he served in St Christopher's, Anguilla and St Eustatius. During his service in the West Indies districts he was a vocal opponent of slavery and the use of enslaved labour.
