Admin history: The mission summer schools began in 1910 and were original held the week of Whitsuntide. The first summer school had about 50 attendees but by 1914 - when the tradition of holding them at Swanwick in Derbyshire seems to have been established - attendance had reached just over 300. These early summer schools were attended by mainly young people, few of whom were likely to enter overseas service, but whom the WMMS hoped would act as promoters of mission in the circuits and districts of the Methodist Church in Britain.
