Back entrance to a Nayar house compound
This gateway is the entrance to the back of a Nayar compound. The Nayars were traditionally matrilineal, and the traditional Nayar household consisted of all the matrilineally related kin, male and female, descended from a common female ancestor, living in one large house and compound.
