House in Kerala

This house, with a wide verandah, tiled roof and brick-and-plaster walls, was a modern version of a more traditional house in Kerala. It is raised off the ground to protect against floods in the monsoon. In front are coconuts, which had many uses, including fibre for rope and oil for cooking.
