These large terracotta horses are found in and around temples all over south India, often as a vehicle of the deity Aiyanar. On the left we see an arrangement of painted stones, in which two vertical ones support a horizontal one. These stones are often found in south India as a memorial to a woman who died in childbirth (and was later deified). The swings attached to the top stone by chains (in the background) are sometimes understood as a swing that a young girl or woman would use. |
