Summary: This Lambadi woman was part of a large group who danced in a Chenchu settlement in the plains. She wears the heavy jewellery and colourful clothing characteristic of Lambadis (or Banjaras), a semi-nomadic population from further west and north. While Christoph von Furer-Haimendorf spent most of his time among the roughly 400 Chenchus living as hunter-gatherers on the Amrabad Plateau, most Chenchus (about 3,000) lived in villages in the plains, where this photograph was taken. Chenchus lived near but were not integrated into the social life of these villages (dominated by local peasant castes). Like the Lambadis, and others, they lived a life apart.
