Summary: |
These Chenchu houses, rectangular with mud walls, resemble those built by Telugu peasants and not the circular ones built by Chenchus in the forest. While Christoph von Furer-Haimendorf spent most of his time among the roughly 400 Chenchus living as hunters and gatherers on the Amrabad Plateau, most Chenchus (about 3,000) lived in villages in the plains. Chenchus lived near but were not integrated into the social life of these villages (dominated by local peasant castes). |
