Summary: |
These women are part of a larger group who are cleaning, carding and spinning cotton. The women sitting on the left are using a bow to card the cotton, which is a common and old method in India. The other squatting woman is pounding the cleaned cotton with a wooden mallet. Christoph von Furer-Haimendorf identified these people as 'Kanara [Kannada]' in his notes, which presumably means that they are Kannada-spearkers. |
