A grant from the Rockefeller Foundation enabled him to study at the London School of Economics, under the anthropologist Bronislaw Malinowski. In 1936, he went to the Naga Hills in northeast India for his first fieldwork; over the next four decades, he worked extensively in south & central India, northeast India and Nepal. In 1950 he was appointed Professor of Anthropology at SOAS, where he established the Department of Anthropology. During his career, he published seventeen books, most of them ethnographies of tribal cultures. He was President of the Royal Anthropological Institute (1975-77) and a pioneer in the field of visual anthropology.

500 |a This ritual altar is typical of many erected in special locations throughout the valley, especially in the sacred bamboo groves on the outskirts of a village where the clan ancestors of that village are thought to reside : this altar is made of bamboo striplings and decorated with bamboo shavings; the eggshells on the altar and lying on the ground are the remains of the ritual : While chanting, the shaman-priest breaks dozens of eggs, which are then considered to have been sacrificed to a spirit : In Apatani ritual practice, each spirit has a specific number of eggs as well as chickens and other animals, that must be given to it : this scene was described by Christoph von Fürer-Haimendorf: ‘We also passed a bamboo structure such as erected at certain religious rites, which bore the shells of not less than two hundred eggs recently offered to the spirits of the forest.’
