Summary: As this photograph shows, Apatanis live in compact villages, narrow houses approx : 15’ x 40’ , and nuclear families in order to use every square foot of land for wet-rice agriculture : Porches, front and back, extend the living and working area, and they provide a public viewing gallery, as well : the stacks of freshly-cut firewood, on the left, will be used to cook the food and prepare the rice beer that are required in large amounts during the Myoko festival celebrated in March, when this photograph was taken : the tall poles 15-20 metres high, seen here are also erected during this festival : the one in the background stands near a ritual platform, on which several people are sitting.
