Summary: This village is Hija, one of nine villages that sit on the perimeter of the Apatani valley, squeezed between paddy fields and mountains : Given the need to conserve every available metre of land for wet-rice production, Apatanis live in densely populated villages similar to this : In 1962, the year Christoph von Fürer-Haimendorf took this photograph, he reported that this village contained 433 houses : We can also see that the houses are crowded together in regular rows and that they are considerably smaller than those of their near neighbours : apatanis live in nuclear families and in houses approximately 12-15 metres long and 2 to 4 metres wide.
