Standing on a porch, this Apatani man holds a metal plate as does another man half obscured to his right, : Plates like these were invested with great value by Apatanis, who used them in payment of debts, land and animal purchases, as well as marriage negotiations and feud settlements : Struck with a stick during a procession in a major festival, they are also the only musical instrument played by Apatanis : Some plates were traded down from Tibet, which gave them prestige, but others were made and traded up from Assam : two special plates play a key role in the foundational story of the Apatani valley, and even today people claim that they possess those historical plates : the two plates shown here may well be claimed to be those historical plates. |
