This Apatani man, who may be a shaman, is standing in front of ritual altar built during the Myoko festival, which was being celebrated during Christoph von Fürer-Haimendorf's two-week visit to the Apatani valley in March 1962 : the altar stands near a house the wooden steps to the porch are visible on the far left, : although unfinished, the altar appears to be dedicated to Kharun, a powerful spirit who protects against disease and misfortune : On the ground we see a few egg shells : Several dozen eggs will be used in the ritual, which will also involve chanting and the sacrifice of many chicks. |
