Summary: On the left an Apatani shaman is chanting on the first day of the month-long Myoko festival : He wears a special shawl, textile headdress and chains of metal beads hanging from the skewer in his hair knot, which mark him as a shaman : the bands of cane he wears below his knee used to be common among Apatani men, but by 1978, when this photograph was taken, they were ceremonial wear only : On the far left, in the corner, is a structure built by placing pieces of split wood from the sampe tree, at right angles : It is thought to attract the spirits to the ritual : the shaman's bow rests near the structure : In front of the shaman is a container of rice beer, for his consumption : the man in the centre may or may not be a shaman, but he assists by chanting in alternation with the shaman.
